"In child development, nature is not just an environment — it is a teacher. As Açı Eryaman College, we embrace the Forest School approach and ensure our children spend quality outdoor time through weekly forest days and nature workshops."
Approach
Forest School is a long-term pedagogical approach in which children learn through first-hand experience in natural environments, guided by their own curiosity and interests. Born in Scandinavia in the 1950s, the model is today the most established practice of nature-based education in Europe and Türkiye.
At Açı Eryaman College, we spend one day a week in the forest with our children, supporting their physical, emotional and social development as a whole. We believe the bond children build with nature makes learning last, and we make this approach a natural part of our educational process.
"Let them go outside." — This sentence, which captures the essence of the Forest School approach, reminds us that nature is the most powerful learning environment in child development.
Development Areas
A real bond with nature nourishes four core areas of a child's development together. Learning through outdoor experience reinforces life skills as a whole, alongside classroom education.
Running, climbing and moving across natural terrain outdoors supports balance, coordination and muscle development. Regular forest-day practice strengthens children's physical endurance and energy.
The open-ended materials nature offers (stones, branches, leaves, water, soil) invite children to experiment, build hands-on experience and find original solutions. Creative thinking grows in place of ready-made toys.
Observing seasonal cycles, living creatures and the ecosystem first-hand builds a relationship with nature grounded in respect and love. The foundations of sustainable living habits are laid early.
Cooperation within a group, taking turns, emotional balance and risk awareness are built through daily practice in nature. Children develop self-confidence, communication and resilience through real forest experience.
